Silent Columns, 1991-1992
Address:
Hampstead, London, United Kingdom
Description:

Trieste, Italy and England

It was through my response to the horror of the Yugoslavian conflict breaking out over the border from Trieste that this sculpture came about. The conflict brought out negative human emotions all around me as I worked through a freezing winter in an abandoned and incomplete basement amid terraced vineyards 300m above the city.

The Director of the gallery where it was exhibited (Nadia Bassanese Studio D’Arte) remarked that she’d never had so many people sit quietly for so long with a sculpture. The final home of the work is now a peaceful garden in Hampstead, London.
